I wanted to discuss a hybrid design that has some potentially interesting applications. The combination is using a rotary viscous damping hinge combined with a friction hinge. This combined design could be used where a pivoting door, panel, LCD or whatever your component is needs to free fall without slamming but never closing fully and then human intervention would be needed to complete the closing cycle or you just have a need to get your fingers behind the panel for whatever reason or it could be a security device where you want someone to complete the closing manually to be sure the door or panel is latched. I am sure product designers, engineers and inventors would have a potential application. An LCD in the roof of a car comes to mind for me, the user can adjust the angle in any position they need.
