Cubicles are famous for these overhead bins, sort of similar to what you see in airplanes. In cubicles you must hold these in place so they don’t come crashing down disturbing your neighbors or whacking yourself in the head. To add some safety in the design we can cleverly hide a rotary viscous damper at the pivot point too suppress that awful crash. I notice in airliners there is a spring loaded hinge instead of a rotary viscous damper. I think its due to the fact that they put a dashpot in the latch to absorb some of the dynamic load. It’s a common design but requires more room to accommodate the dashpot. I am sure one day they’ll realize the rotary viscous damper is more cost effective and convenient.
